Applying ELL Strategies to Literacy Decline Among Black Students
MEd capstone proposing SIOP and CALLA strategies as research-informed solutions to the literacy and achievement gap affecting Black students in U.S. public schools. Draws on authentic, servant, and transformational leadership theory.
ResearchELL StrategiesEquityLeadership
Why does national statistic show low literacy stagnation for Black students in the United States compared to mainstream Whites and other minority groups, of whom are newly immigrated to the country? Regardless of legislative acts spanning a century — Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, No Child Left Behind — literacy rates continue to budge, but not soar. As such, turning this educational oversight around requires leaders who are self-reflective, with an approach that is either servant-based, transformational, or both.— Capstone Research Paper, ED-6500, Northcentral University

Front-End Analysis & Implementation Plan — Online ELL Module
Two-part ADDIE project: Front-End Analysis examines a global multilingual learner population; Implementation Plan details community of practice, LMS analytics, ADA accommodations, and contingency planning.
ADDIENeeds AnalysisADALMS
The target population for this online ELL course consists of multilingual learners ages 14 and above, representing diverse linguistic backgrounds across global contexts. Learner characteristics include varying levels of prior English exposure, access to technology ranging from personal devices to shared institutional computers, and in some cases documented learning disabilities requiring ADA-compliant accommodations. The instructional need driving this course design is the absence of a flexible, self-paced ELL pathway capable of serving this breadth of learner profiles simultaneously.— Front-End Analysis, ID-5000, Northcentral University

From Needs Analysis to Learner-Facing Instruction
Complete ID sequence: FAST/ABCD goals & objectives with three differentiated learner profiles, scripted instructional tutorial, and English Quest Level 3 — a gamified ELL platform with progress tracking and Prosperity Points.
ADDIEFAST/ABCDGamified ELL
Goal: Given a set of documents requiring imaging, imaging staff will correctly prepare, index, scan, and quality-check all materials, reducing error rates and minimizing client complaints. Learner Profile A (Cindy): 15-year veteran, low error rate, resistant to procedural change. Learner Profile B (Katherine): Mid-tenure, moderate errors attributed to personal circumstances. Learner Profile C (Robert): New hire, high error rate, requires foundational procedural orientation. Each ABCD objective was designed to address the distinct entry points of all three profiles simultaneously.— Goals & Objectives Document, ID-5000, Northcentral University

On Target (3): Speaks clearly and distinctly 100–95% of the time, but mispronounces one word. Needs Review (2): Speaks clearly and distinctly 94–85% of the time, mispronounces no more than one word. Not Acceptable (1): Often mumbles or cannot be understood, or mispronounces more than one word. Designed for use without disrupting the natural learning environment.— Oral Presentation Rubric, ESL-5003, Northcentral University

ELL Assessment Philosophy & Letter to Superintendent
Reflective essay on WIDA, NAEP, SOLOM, TOEFL, and IELTS frameworks. Paired with a superintendent letter synthesizing Hong's (2018) research on listening comprehension and ELL proficiency with four dissemination strategies.
ReflectionWIDA/NAEPProfessional Writing
Prior to assuming a leadership role in education, my view of ELL assessment was, in retrospect, generic and parochial — shaped more by personal ethical instinct than by professional standards. Engaging with WIDA, NAEP accommodations, SOLOM, and the validity frameworks underlying formal assessment instruments fundamentally shifted how I understand the relationship between what we measure and what we value. Assessment, done well, is not a judgment. It is a description — and that distinction carries significant consequences for how we design learning environments for culturally and linguistically diverse students.— Reflective Essay on ELL Assessment, ESL-5003, Northcentral University
Writing experiences across three ELL proficiency levels. Three 7th grade Social Studies assessments applying Bloom's Taxonomy — each with SPED accommodations, ELL scaffolding, and cultural differentiation tracks.

Assessment Topic: The History of HBCUs (Bloom's Level: Comprehension). Standard Track: Students write a one-page summary of HBCUs and their significance in American education. SPED Accommodation: Student may present orally to the teacher in lieu of written submission; peer tutoring available for students with written communication disabilities. ELL Scaffolding: Key vocabulary pre-taught; length reduced to one paragraph with sentence frames provided. Cultural Adaptation: Students connect HBCU history to a comparable institution or equity movement in their country of heritage.— Differentiated Assessment Design, ED-5008, Northcentral University
